People have many different ways of praying. Sometimes we sing or dance our prayers and sometimes we keep silence. Sometimes we look to clergy or books for words and sometimes we talk to God freely, saying whatever comes to mind. Sometimes prayers are enacted, such as in a protest or service project. To understand spirituality, we must remember that we do not live in individuated cocoons.
In fact, we all live in vibrant cultures which are composed of elements such as historical heritage, language, artistic expression, legal institutions, religious understanding and expression, education and relationships. In other words, the phenomenon we call spirituality is shaped and formed by what we call culture … the diverse cultures into which we are born, educated and formed.
