The magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Haiti yesterday [12.01.2010] is the strongest earthquake to hit the region in more than two centuries, The last major earthquake to strike Haiti's side of the island was in 1860. geologists say.

Haiti is part of the island of Hispaniola, which also hosts the Dominican Republic. It is a poor country, ranked 149th on the Human Development Index (of 182 countries).
