Salam students

well, high marks and grades sirf GENIUS nahi lay saktay, average, aur below average students bhi lay saktay hain farak sirf study strategies ka hota hai, aur haan dedication(discipline), time management and hard work...but all can be LEARNED, no one is born with study skills you have to learn them and APPLY them.

so, in this thread I will "share" some books and TIPS that are really good source of guidance for students.

for now I will mention this book:

more to come....stay tuned!

Before I start here is a fact:

Herbert Walberg, professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies of super-achieving students says, "“Knowing how to make the most of your innate abilities counts for more. Infinitely more.”
In fact, Walberg says, students with high I.Q.s sometimes don’t do as well as classmates with lower I.Q.s. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to buckle down.

Also, what I have come to believe is that one has to have the DESIRE to do good, if there is no desire inside and one is just studying coz parents said so, well parental pressure MIGHT work with some kids, but it does not last long in the long run. wese Parents ki support zayada meaningful hote hai rather than pressure.

what I am trying to say is, unless you don't have the desire to study, to do good, you will not be motivated to sit and give it your 100%.

In fact you would have noticed if you sit down to study half heartedly you EASILY get distracted, all of sudden you will feel hungry, or the urge to clean the room, or use computer and your weak desire to study will easily be over come by distractions.

ok enough talk lets get to the business.

here are some things you can do to help study better if you are not satisfied with you performance:

1. Set priorities.

make a list of all your activities and number them or rate them from high to low priority.
EXAMPLE:

*Research on Psychology paper (3)
*Calculus Problem set (1)
*Clean room (2)
*watch Bat man (6)
*Help with dinner (4)
*chat online (5)

2. Have a specific spot to study and get rid of all the distractions (magazines, laptop (if u don't need it), phone, etc.)

3. Study anywhere — or everywhere, use that extra half hour in the bus/subway to review your notes from previous lecture. prepare some cheat sheets/q-cards with formulas or stuff you want to remember.

4. Get organized -- use folders and files to organize your notes, have stationary stuff ready, you wont believe i have seen ppl come to write exams with our pencils / pens, beats me!

5. Learn how to read -- you can actually increase your reading/understanding speed with practice ofcourse.

6. Schedule your time-- this is the best way to manage your time, every day spend at-least 10 mins on how you want to make use of your time.
have a Master schedule which is fixed, like time to get up, lectures, break fast, lunch, dinner. and than add to this schedule your study time. have a calender posted at your study spot with all DUE dates marked with bold colors so you can see.

spending 10 min to make a study schedule every day can save you hours !!

7. Take good notes ! pay attention in class, and try to write down wat you can, don't write down every single word.......main points and solved problems are good. but try to understand as much as possi in class, don't be like i am gona hit the library or study at home later, you will increase your work load, if you get the basic principles in class its easy to study later on.

8. Ask questions get involved in class, switch off that phone!

9. Review! Review! Review! -- after you finish your study, get a sheet of paper and try to summaries what you have learned..... actually my psychology professor always said, best way to test your self is to stand in front of the mirror and pretend you are teaching yourself and repeat what you have learned.

the way I tested my self is by telling my self, IF i had to explain this to someone else how would i do it, what examples i would give (repeat the ones form notes and assignments), and that helped.

hope that helped a bit, I will also try to post about how to study for Tests/Exams.
hopefully I will get the time to do so.
