Daughter of a peon at a Lucknow-based school, 10-year-old Sushma Verma scored 309 out of 500 in the Uttar Pradesh Intermediate Board examination 2010.

Despite scoring 61.8 percent, Sushma was declared failed, as she scored just seven and six respectively in two Physics papers and got 30 marks in the practical examination, taking the total to 43.

As per the rules, passing theory papers is mandatory in the Uttar Pradesh board. “A student must secure at least 22 out of 70 in subjects like Physics and others involving 30 marks in the practicals,” said District Inspector of Schools (DIOS), Lucknow, Ganesh Prasad.

However, Sushma’s parents are also confident that their daughter would pass the exam once her answer sheets are re-evaluated.

“We have full faith in our daughter and firmly believe that she would pass the Physics theory paper by a good margin following the re-evaluation,” Sushma’s father Tej Bahadur said.

Before Sushma, the record for the youngest matriculate was held by Patna’s Tathagat Avatar Tulsi, who accomplished the feat when he was nine-years-old, officials said.

Her brother Shailendra had passed class 12th at the age of 11 and cleared the Scholastic Assessment Test and Test of English as a Foreign Language. He had also secured admission to a US university but could not go due to financial problems.

Sushma had scored 78 in Hindi, 55 in English, 68 in Biology and 65 in Chemistry.

Ten-year-old Sushma Verma was one of the candidates appearing for the CPMT examinations on Friday. A student of St Meera’s Inter College in Lucknow, she had cleared her high schoolexaminations at the age of 7, scoring around 59 per cent. This year, she had appeared for the Intermediate examinations.

“I always wanted to be a doctor so that I can provide free treatment to the poor. While waiting for my Intermediate results, I decided to take up coaching for CPMT,” she said. Born in February 2000, Sushma had secured direct admission to Class IX when she was around 5 years old. Before this she had studied at home.

While her father Tej Bahadur is a daily wage labourer and has studied till Class VIII, her mother Chaya, a homemaker, is illiterate. Sushma’s brother Shailendra (16) had passed his Intermediate exams when he was 11 and cleared his BCA from the Lucknow University at the age of 14. “Shailendra used to teach me when I was at home. It was due to him that I could study further,” said Sushma. Asked about the feat, Kanpur’s Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University Registrar Mahesh Chandra said: “I am not aware of the case but will look into the matter.”
