ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Monday that he was aware of his constitutional responsibilities regarding the appointment of a new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

According to the spokesman for the PM House, the prime minister will announce appointments of the Army Chief and CJCSC at the same time after holding consultations.

The spokesman quoted the prime minister saying that his government would keep the interests of the country supreme while appointing the new Chief of Army Staff and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The tenure for outgoing CJCSC General Khalid Shameem Wyne expires at midnight, while the tenure of Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani will expire on November 29.

If the government fails to appoint a new CJCSC, Army Chief Kayani will assume the responsibility until the appointment is made.

On Sunday in a statement issued by the ISPR, Army Chief Kayani was quoted as saying that he would retire when his tenure expired and it was time for others to carry forward the mission of making Pakistan a truly democratic, prosperous and peaceful country that embodies the finest dreams our founding fathers had envisaged for us.
