Health Benefits of Prawns


Calories in Prawns


Prawns are considered to be a healthy food. However, many people in recent days have become curious to know about the calorie content in prawns. 100 grams of uncooked prawns have about 106 - 144 calories. On the other hand, 75 grams of peeled and cooked prawns, has around 54 calories in it. 1 cup of shelled and raw prawns has around 166 - 168 calories in it, while 1 ounce of cooked prawns consists of 40 calories.


From the point of view of the nutrition facts of prawns, it is said to be rich in proteins, various vitamins and minerals. So let us now know about prawns nutrition facts for about 100 grams of the same. The fat content in prawns is about 1.75 grams and the protein content is about 20 - 24 grams. It is also rich in minerals. Some of the mineral contents present in 100 grams of prawn have been listed below.
•Iron: 2.40mg
•Sodium: 148 - 150 mg
•Potassium: 185 - 186 mg
•Zinc: 1.11 - 1.12 mg
•Calcium: 52 mg
Prawns are also a good source of vitamin C, and almost 2-3 mg of the same is present in 100 grams of prawn. Apart from this, the carbohydrate content in prawns is around 0.90 - 0.91 gram and selenium content is about 38 - 39 microgram. It is also very low in the sugar content (sugar is almost absent in prawns!).


Health Benefits of Prawns


Consuming sufficient quantities of prawns is necessary to gain its many health benefits. Being a food rich in many essential nutrients, there are several health benefits of prawn. Some of them are mentioned below.
•Prawns are a fairly good source of protein, which help in proper growth and development of the body.
•Prawns are also a rich source of selenium. Selenium is believed to prevent the growth of cancer cells in the body, thereby protecting the person from life threatening diseases such as cancer.
•The omega 3 content in prawns, has been associated with the prevention and also in reduction of the Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
•Cardiovascular health is one of the biggest health concerns in the modern day world. However, the high content of vitamin B12 and low cholesterol content in prawns, help in protecting the walls of blood vessels and therefore contribute to the betterment of cardiovascular health of the person.
•Moreover, presence of minerals such as calcium, makes prawns useful for maintaining healthy teeth and bones.
Prawns calories are low as compared to the calories in meat and beef. Also, the other nutritional content in prawns, make it a tastier and healthier option over many food stuffs. With the above discussion, I hope you've got a fair idea of the nutritional value of prawns and the calorie content in it.
