Sinus infection don’t cured by oral steroids. Steroids prednisolone to reduce the symptoms of sinus infections are no better than placebo, according to new research.
Dr. Richard Rosenfeld, a professor at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and president ENT, who did not participate in this study said that this is possible, steroids is not as simple as the ability of the body’s own powerful to fight against infection.
“If you let nature take its course, the vast majority will erase their own” Rosenfeld told reporters from Reuters.
Researchers suspect that oral steroids can be left to fend for themselves, because the nasal steroid makes people feel better a few days ago a small advantage (see Reuters Health Report May 16, 2012 to remove infection at the earliest.
Venekamp Roderick, author of the study, said Dr., “” nose nasal spray can prevent sinus steroids, so we believe that management (systemic) corticosteroids, may have beneficial effects, in Utrecht, the Netherlands Netherlands University Medical Center researcher.
venekamp and his colleagues proposed the 174 who had come to see their doctor, one day in patients with nasal symptoms for a week or 30 mg pill% of prednisone or placebo.
The participants lived at least 5 days or a runny nose, congestion and facial pain. They do not know if they were assigned to the prednisone group or placebo group. Two weeks into the study to maintain a diary of their symptoms.
The researchers noted that their findings were published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, found that most symptoms persist for as long as in the steroid group, because they do not have 7-9 days in the placebo group.
In addition, each group of patients with symptoms of a similar feel within a week absolutely free. Among the steroids, 33% have no symptoms, a week later, those who had forged, 25% reported no more symptoms. Similarly, 63% in the steroid group after one week without facial pain or pressure, and 56% in the placebo group.
The researchers determined that these differences could be due to chance rather than drugs. Based on the findings, we believe that systemic corticosteroids are not conducive to a large population, “told reporters Venekamp Reuters.
He said that the types may be some patients may benefit, but more research is needed to know who they are. “Do not use an oral steroid. During this period, the patient has left few options.
Previous studies have shown that only seven percent of the sensation of steroid nasal sprays to increase a better chance – which means that only one in 15 people who will benefit.
Also carry the side effects of steroids, such as the risk of bone loss, which is their long-term concern, doctors have expressed about drug abuse (see Reuters Health Report July 25, 2012.
Antibiotics do not seem to offer much help sinus infection, they also have the risk, such as stomach pain and resistance (see Reuters Health report February 15, 2012.
Rosenfeld said the decongestant nasal spray and saline irrigation products, such as nasal pot, can help relieve symptoms.
Ultimately, patience will help people through their infection and to feel better, Rosenfeld said his study found that 73% of people in the 7-12 days of not taking antibiotics or steroids to improve.
