Sri Lanka 406 for 3 (Jayawardene 136*, Samaraweera 130*, Sangakkara 70, Warnapura 59) v Pakistan
On a warm day in Karachi, when Test cricket returned to Pakistan after 16 months, the Sri Lankan top order indulged themselves to reach a strong position by the end of the opening day. Mahela Jayawardene presented a visual treat, Thilan Samaraweera and Kumar Sangakkara accumulated steadily, and Malinda Warnapura thrilled with a breezy knock as the visitors cashed in after winning the toss on a perfect batting pitch.
There is something extremely graceful about Jayawardene's batting. Perhaps, it's the economy of movement, his ease, and the languid flow of his bat's movement that catches the eye. There was a delicious straight drive on the up off Umar Gul today that captured his innings in a nutshell. The ball landed short of a length outside the off stump. Sachin Tendulkar, or even Sangakkara, imparts velocity to such deliveries with a fierce thump at the point of impact, whereas Virender Sehwag would rely on tremendous bat speed. Jayawardene seems to just caress his shots. Today, he waved his bat forward to meet the ball with the middle and it sped away. And he did it repeadtedly through his innings to compile his first Test hundred against Pakistan, the only country missing from his list of centuries.

Pakistan 44 for 1 trail Sri Lanka 644 for 7 (Jayawardene 240, Samaraweera 231) by 600 runs
Mahela Jayawardene struck his first double-century outside Sri Lanka - his fifth overall - while Thilan Samaraweera went past 200 for the first time in Tests to bat Pakistan out of the game on the second day in Karachi. They feasted on an insipid bowling attack, rendered helpless by the flat pitch, and posted 437 runs - a Test record - for the fourth wicket. Sri Lanka eventually declared on 644 for 7 but Pakistan's batsmen may not have it as easy as the visitors did after Muttiah Muralitharan dismissed Salman Butt shortly before

Pakistan 296 for 3 (Younis 149*, Malik 56) trail Sri Lanka 644 for 7 dec by 348 runs
Pakistan's new captain Younis Khan hit a fine century and combined well with his predecessor Shoaib Malik to thwart a stiff challenge from the Sri Lankan spinners. On a pitch that got increasingly slower, Sri Lanka fought hard but Younis stood firm to lead Pakistan some way towards avoiding the follow-on.
Younis' innings said a lot about his character and batsmanship. You could describe it as 'typical' but that would be too flippant. His captaincy had been castigated for his first-day field settings, which allowed Sri Lanka to run away to a mammoth total. Today, Younis replied with his bat.
He defended a lot but didn't poke around. He slog-swept and reverse-swept but never looked desperate or too cheeky, as he often does in one-day cricket. He had occasional problems with Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis but didn't get bogged down. The loose balls were punished and Younis created run-scoring opportunities regularly with planned, calculated shots.

Pakistan 574 for 5 (Younis 306*, Faisal 57) trail Sri Lanka 644 by 70 runs.
Younis Khan took full advantage of a dead pitch at the National Stadium, scoring his maiden triple-century - the third by a Pakistan batsman - to push his side to safety and the match towards a draw. After four bat-dominated days, the only interest now left in the contest is whether the new Pakistan captain can break Brian Lara's Test record of 400.
It was in line with Younis' character that he brought up the landmark with a reverse-sweep. The cap was off, sajda was performed and a million-dollar smile lit up his sunny face. Fifty-two years earlier, Hanif Mohammad hit Pakistan's highest Test score, a mammoth 337 against West Indies that took three days in making. The story goes that a Bajan boy, watching it from a palm tree, fell down and upon recovering consciousness in the hospital, wondered: Is Hanif still batting? He still was. Younis might well have elicited a similar reaction today. He batted on for 545 balls, and is not yet finished.

Sri Lanka 644 for 7 dec (Mahela 240, Samaraweera 231) and 144 for 5 (Sangakkara 65) drew with Pakistan 765 for 6 dec (Younis 313, Akmal 158*)
In the end the pitch won. Pakistan created late excitement by knocking out five top-order wickets but they didn't have enough time to pull off the miracle. After four-and-a-half dreary days dominated by the bat, the game sprung alive in dramatic fashion on the final evening when Umar Gul and Danish Kaneria struck in rapid succession to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 120 for 5. Thilan Samaraweera and Prasanna Jayawardene, however, pulled down the shutters with some cautious batting to ensure there would not be any further drama.
The final day began with all the attention centred on whether Younis Khan would go past Brian Lara's record of 400 not out, but he couldn't. He fell after adding only seven runs to his overnight score of 306, cleaned up by Dilhara Fernando. But Kamran Akmal continued Pakistan's strong reply on the flat pitch, scoring an unbeaten 158 to give Pakistan a 121-run lead.
