KARACHI: Renowned Film and TV actress Tamanna Begum passed away after protracted illness in Karachi on Monday,

Tamanna Begum was born in Lahore and started her career with Radio Pakistan and did some theatre plays as well. She peaked in the 1970s and 1980s.

Tamanna started acting in movies and quickly rose to fame with her robust performances.

She had acted alongside popular stars such as Talat Iqbal and Waheed Murad‚ and her films were huge successes. However‚ with deteriorating situation of Lollywood, she had to settle for acting in television plays.

Five bodies found from Askari II

KARACHI: Five dead bodies were recovered from a bungalow situated in Askari II area of Karachi on Wednesday, Geo News reported.

According to SP Clifton Traiq Dharejo, five members of a family were found dead from a bungalow in Askari II.

The victims include a couple, their son and his wife and a child.

Police said that it is not yet confirmed that whether they were killed due to enmity or resisting in an armed robbery.

Nawaz should apologise first: Shujaat
LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has asked PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif to apologize for his association with dictators.

Shujaat was responding to a statement of Nawaz Sharif in which the PML-N president urged the Chaudhry Brothers to tender an apology for their association with a dictator.

The PML-Q chief said Nawaz had committed the same crime 15 years ago.

'A military dictator had taken him to the Punjab Assembly. Too much happens in politics and we can sit together for national interest,' Shujaat said.

New polio case reported in North Waziristan
PESHAWAR: Health officials have confirmed 12th polio case of current year, which was reported in seven-month child Bakhth Ullah of North Waziristan.

According to official sources, the poliovirus was confirmed in a child by National Institute of Health (NIH) laboratory.

The affected child from this crippling disease was son of Jan Ullah, who lives in Mami-Rogha, Miran Shah, North Waziristan. Bakhth Ullah couldn't receive polio drops due to refusal of his parents.

Health experts claimed that though the present case was the first confirmed polio case from North Waziristan however such type of poliovirus was already reported in total 15 cases, which shows that such virus exists in the area.

Meanwhile, the provinces have been asked to ensure effective polio awareness drives to educate parents to vaccinate their children against this crippling disease.

The next round of vaccination will be held from March 12-14, 2012 in 68 districts and FATA.

Peshawar: Suicide blast during funeral kills 15

PESHAWAR: At least 15 people were killed and dozens others injured in Peshawar's Budh Bher area when a suicide bomber blew himself up during funeral prayers, Geo News reported.

The blast went off near a graveyard where people were offering funeral prayers in the Budh Bher area on the outskirts of Peshawar.

Police and rescue teams reached the scene and cordoned off the area.

The victims were shifted to the nearby hospitals including Lady Reading Hospital.

Deputy Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Khushdil Khan also attended the prayers and left the spot minutes before the blast.

Tendulkar’s century of centuries at last

DHAKA: Star batsman Sachin Tendulakar set a unique record of scoring one hundred hundreds in all forms of cricket when he reached the three-figures against Bangladesh in the fourth match of the Asia Cup one-day tournament here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Friday.

This was a great moment for which cricket fans were waiting for almost a year as the ‘Little Master’ was in a tremendous pressure to become the first batsman in history to score 100 international centuries.

The hype around Tendulkar's 100th international century began during last year's World Cup, when two hundreds in the group stages put him on 99 international hundreds. However, he failed to get to three figures on India's tour of England, the home series against West Indies and the tour of Australia, and has finally achieved the feat in Bangladesh.

Tendulkar, who turns 39 next month, achieved the feat as he recorded his 49th ODI century while he had already made 51 hundreds Test cricket.

Tendulkar who has been playing for a long period of over 22 years has a number of records in Test and One-day cricket.

The Mumbai batsman, who has played the most number of Tests and One-dayers, has also compiled most runs and centuries in these two forms.

Tsunami alert as big quake strikes off Indonesia
Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- A massive earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a tsunami alert for the Indian Ocean.

The quake struck about 434 kilometers (270 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Indonesia's Aceh province, and had a magnitude of 8.6, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It took place at a depth of 23 kilometers (14 miles).

A second quake, magnitude 8.2, occurred off the west coast of Sumatra about two hours later, the USGS said.

Gary Gibson from the Seismology Research Center in Melbourne, Australia, said the location of the second quake reduces the possibility of a tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of destruction or deaths Wednesday.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on local television that there were no reports of casualties or damage in Aceh.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch for the entire Indian Ocean, and the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said it had put up a tsunami warning as well.

Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated, the warning center said. "It may already have been destructive along some coasts."

How are earthquake's measured?

The center also said that "when no major waves have occurred for at least two hours after the estimated arrival time or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours, then local authorities can assume the threat is passed." The center posted approximate arrival times for waves in different parts of the region, which were predicted for different times in different cities throughout the day.

Waves were reported at 1-meter (3.3-foot) amplitude offshore in Meulaboh, Indonesia, but in other cities they were reported at about a foot or less, according to the warning center.

British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that Britain "stands ready to help if required."

The first quake took place at 2:38 p.m. local time (4:38 a.m. ET).

Officials called on coastal residents in low-lying areas in the region to seek higher ground.

The power went out in Banda Aceh and residents were moving to higher ground, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency.

The areas most at risk of a tsunami are coastal areas of Aceh, particularly the island of Simeulue, Prih Harjadi, an official for the Indonesian geophysics agency said on Metro TV.

The earthquake appears to have involved a horizontal movement rather than a vertical movement, so it is less likely that it will generate a tsunami, Gibson said.

He also said that the tremor took place a long way offshore and was therefore unlikely to have caused much damage itself.

In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude underwater earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people in 14 countries. The majority of the deaths were in Indonesia, with Aceh bearing the brunt.

That quake took place 250 kilometers (155 miles) south-southeast of Banda Aceh at a depth of 30 kilometers (19 miles).

The tsunami, which washed away entire communities, caused nearly $10 billion in damage and more casualties than any other tsunami in history, according to the United Nations.

Since then, officials have worked to improve warning systems and have carried out drills in the region.

Indonesia is on the so-called Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The earthquake Wednesday comes just over year after a magnitude 9 quake off the northeast coast of Japan caused a devastating tsunami. The death toll from that disaster stands at about 15,850.

WANA: 3/06/2012: At least five people were killed and three injured in US drone attack at Tehsil Barmal of South Waziristan Agency on Sunday, Geo News reported.

Sources said that in the latest of the series of attacks by CIA operated spy planes the predator fired four missiles on a house located at Tehsil Barmal in Wana area of South Waziristan, killing five of the residents therein and injured three.

The house was completely razed to the ground. The local people took out bodies and the injured on self-help basis.

Sources said that there were still drones hovering over the area.
