Beating tiredness

Well, if you are feeling a little blue, blame it on the season! Seriously there is something called ‘seasonal affective disorder’ which makes you irritable, depressed and tired. In fact fatigue is the root cause of all the other feelings. If you feel extremely tired or weary then read on….

Fatigue can be temporary or chronic. It is caused due to overworking, sacrificing rest and sleep. This condition can be cured with adequate rest. Chronic or continuous fatigue is however a serious problem which requires a comprehensive plan of treatment. Chronic fatigue can result from a lot of factors. A specific character trait, like compulsiveness can lead to continuous fatigue. Many persons feel that they cannot rest unless and until they finish the job taken on…no matter what the amount of time it would take to complete the task. Such people are perfectionists, tense and cannot relax unless they complete the whole job, no matter how tired they may be.

Causes of fatigue

Lowered vitality or lack of energy due to wrong eating habits. Fatigue is an indication that the body is not getting sufficient nutrition to furnish it with a constant flow of needed energy.

Anemia is a very common ailment leading to tiredness. It is known as tired blood disturbance. In anemia very little oxygen reaches the tissues with the result that energy cannot be produced normally. This causes constant tiredness and mental depression.

Insomnia or lack of sleep can be a serious cause of fatigue. Sleep induced with sleeping pills and other drugs does not banish fatigue.

Mental tension is another major causes of fatigue. A person, who is tensed and cannot relax, has all the muscles of his body more or less contracted. This leads to needless waste of large amounts of energy. Food is continuously burnt, lactic acid accumulates more rapidly than it can be carried to the liver for conversion to body starch. Persons who are irritable and nervous suffer from this type of fatigue.

Treat fatigue now

Nutritionists say that one who suffers from fatigue should eat a number of small mid meals than full three meals a day. These mid meals should consist of fresh fruits, and/or dried fruits, and/or fruit juice, and/or raw vegetable juice. Carrot juice taken separately or in combination with juices of beetroot and cucumber is highly valuable in overcoming fatigue. Patients suffering from chronic fatigue should eat nuts and root vegetables as these health foods supply energy to the body.

Some tips:

Get extra rest. Listen to your body. Alternate rest with exercise. Gradually increasing your exercise may help decrease your fatigue. Walking is a good way to help reduce fatigue.
Cut back on watching television. Spend that time with friends, try new activities, or travel to break the fatigue cycle.
Get a good night’s sleep. This may be the first step toward controlling fatigue. Eliminate all sound and light disturbances. Avoid eating just before you go to bed. Use your bed only for sleeping. Avoid reading or watching TV in bed.
Get regular exercise during the day (but not within 2 hours of bedtime). This seems to improve sleep. Regular exercise is your best defense against fatigue. If you feel too tired to exercise vigorously, try a short walk.
Eat a balanced diet. Do not skip meals, especially breakfast.
Deal with emotional problems instead of ignoring or denying them.
Take steps to control your stress and workload.
Take time for yourself to do the things that you enjoy, such as listening to music, spending time with friends, or having a massage.
