The Quran is the holy book of Islam and is viewed by Muslims as the direct word of God, the culmination of a series of revelations that included the Torah and the Bible. The Quran is significant not only because of its history, but also because of its continual daily use in Muslim worship.

There are 114 Surahs in the Qur'an, each divided into verses. The chapters or suras are of unequal length, the shortest chapter (Al-Kawthar) has only three ayat (verses) while the longest (Al-Baqara) contains 286 verses. ... The Quran is traditionally written in the eastern Arabian dialect of Classical Arabic. Ironically Muhammad would have spoken the western dialect of Classical Arabic originating from Mecca, so there is already an element of translation inherent in the Quran.

Muslims believe the Quran to be the book of divine guidance revealed from God to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years and view the Quran as God's final revelation to humanity. As the Quran says, "With the truth we (God) have sent it down and with the truth it has come down.
